Who am I?

To borrow State Senator Mallory McMorrow's now famous line: I am a straight, white, Christian, suburban mom. My only son is grown now, however, and lives a couple miles away in Wyoming.
I like to think I'm a lot like my Grandville neighbors. I take advantage of a nice spring day to get out the deck furniture and clean out the flower beds. But I know I have had privileges many never get. I spent 40 years as a journalist which opened all sorts of opportunities: interviewing famous folks, covering school boards, city councils and too many commissions to name. The last 10 years of my career I enjoyed a gem job -- reviewing live theatre.
I have faced personal challenges too. I divorced in 1982 when my son was 5 so I know the plight of single moms. My son has cystic fibrosis so we've known the miracles, and frustrations, of our health care system. But most of all my life has taught me to listen to people, track down the facts and get the job done.

After I retired from The Grand Rapids Press in 2009 I published "Laughing for a Living," a memoir about my years as and entertainment writer. Then I published three books in The Jordan Daily News Mystery Series.  I also enjoy making mudpies -- pottery -- in my basement.
I believe in representative government. There comes a point where  one needs to stop sitting on the sidelines and step up to accept the responsibility of representing and serving the community.
